Speaker Pelosi – Enough is
Enough!
There
are times in the course of
politics when you have to say
“enough is enough”. House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi said today
that she will move to change the
House rules to delay a vote on
the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade
Agreement. President Bush sent
the agreement to Congress on
Monday and under existing rules,
the House would have 60
legislative days to vote on it
(up or down) followed by 30
legislative days for the Senate
to act on it. Speaker Pelosi’s
move would change the rules in
the middle of the process and
put the deal in jeopardy and
would also set a precedent that
would weaken future presidents’
ability to negotiate trade
deals.
The message this move sends is
alarming. It thwarts the
credibility of future Trade
Representatives when negotiating
with other countries; it tells
the people of Latin America that
the U.S. cannot be trusted to
keep its word; it tells American
businesses that politics trumps
the creation of jobs in the U.S.
and increased exports; it
emboldens America’s foes in the
region and around the world; and
it shows that the leaders of the
110th Congress cannot be
trusted. The administration had
negotiated in good faith with
Democratic leaders in Congress
for over a year and failure to
pass this agreement will hurt
our economic and national
security interests.
We must now speak up and tell
Speaker Pelosi that enough is
enough. We must contact the
Speaker’s office and say “Stop
the political ploys and pass the
U.S.-Colombia Free Trade
Agreement”. Below is the contact
information for Speaker Pelosi.
